Very little reassurance from horse race organizers of no repeat of last year’s fiasco

Dear Editor,

Last year’s horse racing activity caused one of the longest and largest traffic pile up in recent memory. My 75 year-old mom and sickly aunts, who were heading to Berbice, were forced to remain locked in traffic for over five hours within a short stretch of road in proximity to the event site. The discomfort they endured is not something you wish on anyone. It was also reported that many other road users missed appointments, such as flights to travel overseas, or official functions.

This event is now returning and there is impending dread of a recurrence of this traffic jam. As usual, the organisers have put very little in the public domain to reassure that there won’t be a repeat of last year’s fiasco. Maybe they think that we have forgotten. This letter therefore is a demand to the organisers of this event and the Guyana Police Force to issue an advisory on plans/arrangements that have been implemented to ensure a smooth flow of traffic this time around.

Sincerely,

M. Abraham
