Suspect in Sophia shooting yet to be arrested

Georgetown Police Commander, Simon Mc Bean yesterday told Stabroek News that the suspect in the shooting in Sophia that left four persons nursing gunshot wounds is yet to be arrested.

The shooting incident occurred at around 9.30 on Tuesday night at ‘B’ Field Sophia access road. The suspect reportedly walked up and indiscriminately fired a gun into a crowd causing everyone to scatter and run for cover. Mc Bean told Stabroek News that investigators do have a description of the suspect, who was at the time wearing a grey hoodie, red and black pants, about 6 feet in height and dark in complexion.

Investigations have revealed that two females, Shellon Collins, 23 years old, and 34-year-old Felicia Thom, both of ‘B’ Field Sophia, had a misunderstanding earlier in the day where Collins claimed that Thom ‘pelted’ her shop. Both women inform-ed their reputed husbands. Collins’ reputed husband, Dion Morris, a 24-year-old labourer, later confronted Thom’s reputed husband, Malcolm Hutson, a 38-year-old minibus driver, on ‘B’ Field access road. A fight ensued between the two and a large crowd gathered. At this point, the shooter indiscriminately discharged several rounds into the crowd which had gathered around the two pugilists. After the shooting, the suspect ran in a northern direction.

The four persons who suffered gunshot wounds are: Abdool Joshua Kamal, a 32-year-old welder of ’A’ Field Sophia, one gunshot wound to his left shoulder, Shellon Collins, 23-year-old shopkeeper, ‘B’ Field Sophia, one gunshot wound to the left side of her face, Omale Dick, 27-year-old labourer, Lodge Housing Scheme, three gunshot wounds (two to the abdomen and one to the left thigh), and Quincy Hoyte, 33-year-old labourer,  ‘B’ Field Sophia, one gunshot wound to the lower back. The victims were picked up and taken to the GPHC, where doctors saw and examined them. Kamal was treated and sent away, while the other victims were admitted. Eight 9mm spent shells were found at the scene.
