The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) has announced that the Albion/Port Mourant estate has again surpassed its weekly production target for the 2nd Crop of 2023 in the week ending August 12.
This was stated in a GuySuCo release yesterday which explained that this achievement was due to the 70% turnout of harvesters this week as against a turnout of 62% in second crop of 2022 resulting in the estate’s increased ability to supply canes to the factory.
The release in addition, stated that workers continue to responded positively to a better-than-expected cane yield in the field and an incentive scheme that is motivating greater productivity. These positive factors, it pointed out, have contributed to the estate’s achievement of its target for the second time since grinding operations began this crop, and will boost the income of workers at the Albion Estate who will earn an additional day’s pay, which will be tax free, through GuySuCo’s Weekly Production Incentive (WPI) programme.
Albion/Port Mourant Estate Manager, Yudhisthira Mana, said that this achievement was possible due to exceptional team work and comradery. “Our success is attributed to our team’s unwavering commitment and the implementation of advanced harvesting techniques. Additionally, favourable weather conditions have played a pivotal role in our recent accomplishments. We are immensely proud of our achievements and look forward to continuing our pursuit of excellence to achieve this crop’s target.”
According to the release, the Albion/Port Mourant estate is slated to produce 47% of the overall expected sugar production in this second crop of 2023 to meet the annual target of 60,858 metric tonnes. And with Rose Hall estate commencing grinding operations in late September, this will further strengthen the industry’s production capacity.
GuySuCo Chief Executive Officer, Sasenarine Singh, in congratulating the workers on the Albion/Port Mourant Estate informed that “the investment of over $17 billion in the field and factory during the last three years funded by the Government of Guyana have started to show some of the expected results despite the entire project to rebuild the largest estate at Albion was constrained by the great floods of 2021.” He thanked the Government of Guyana, the team at the Ministry of Agriculture, as well as the entire Board of Directors of GuySuCo, for their “unwavering support” on this rebuilding project.
