After a 48-hour notice was issued to vendors who are operating along the Corriverton Public Road to move, Mayor Imran Amin on Friday gave the assurance that the stalls will not be bulldozed as was being alleged.
Amin when contacted by Stabroek News explained that the notice was issued in their attempt to better manage the vending situation there. However, he stressed that the vendors would not have been “bulldozed” from the location as was being asserted by some.
According to the Mayor, he met with the vendors prior to the notice attempting to come to a compromise and informing them that stalls are available in the markets.
They have since come to a resolution that includes no one being allowed to vend in close proximity to the recreational park at the location.
Vendors had taken up both sides of the main access road near to the park resulting in a chaotic traffic situation on the weekends and afternoons.
Additionally, he said that the vendors were once again informed and encouraged in relation to the availability of stalls in the markets. According to him, since the notice some of the vendors have visited the council and were given a first-hand look at a few of the stalls available. He stressed that if they are to make applications for the stalls the council would ensure that they are fast-tracked.
Meanwhile, some vendors have opted to move some distance away but remain on the main road. It is unclear when they will move. However, notably, when the expansion of the Corentyne highway begins they will have no other choice but to relocate.
