The first ever national junior golf championships in Guyana’s history will be held on Saturday at the Nexgen Golf Academy on Woolford Avenue from 13:00hrs.
This event comes on the heels of the135 players from around the country who fought their way into the finals of the Inaugural National Golf Championships where the Ministry of Education and the Guyana Tourism Authority played key roles coordinating with the Guyana Golf Association.
The event will feature top players from Regions 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 who participated in the regional tournaments over the past week. Dominant performance by several young players have put them in positions for spots on the national team. Guyana Golf Association (GGA), head, Aleem Hussain said, “The level of talent we discovered from many first time players was truly exceptional and we are confident that with the continued training the academy provides, they will become dominant in the region.
Hussain added, “We have certainly awakened interest in golf in Guyana as evident from the fact that other organizations and sponsors are finally getting involved after many years of the existence of the game.”
Nicholas Fraser, Department Head Unit of Allied Arts noted, “The incredible development and growth of the sport has occurred without access to a golf course and credit is due to the academy’s specialized training programme which has allowed several hundred students to take and pass golf as a PE elective at the CSEC examinations, simultaneously allowing thousands of persons in 8/10 regions access to the sport for the first time.”
The top 30 players will become members of the national team that will represent the country at the events that the GGA has been invited to participate in around the world.
