Randy Smart, 19, of Lot 240 South Road, Lacytown, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus where he was charged with robbery.
It was stated in court that on Friday, August 11, at King Street, while being in the company of another, the defendant stole from Chandradat Mangru, one Samsung cellular phone valued $80,000.
On the day in question at about 10 am, Mangru was sent by the Attorney General’s Chambers to a cambio on King Street to change some foreign currency. He was accompanied by a policeman attached to the Presidential Guard in a vehicle assigned to the Office of the Attorney General.
Upon completing the transaction, he exited the cambio and was proceeding to the vehicle when Smart’s companion approached the complainant and snatched his cellular phone which was in his shirt pocket. He then ran to a waiting motorcycle which was being ridden by Smart, mounted it, and the duo rode away north along King Street. The policeman accompanying Mangru and who was armed with a service pistol, saw what transpired and gave chase on foot. During the pursuit, in the vicinity of North Road and King Street, he discharged several rounds at the escaping men, striking the accomplice and killing him. Smart lost his balance and fell onto the roadway and was subsequently apprehended. The dead man was identified as Abednego Trotman, a 25-year-old.
The police prosecutor objected to bail based on the seriousness and prevalence of the offence and as such bail was refused.
Smart is expected to make his next court appearance on September 13 for statements.
