A 34-year-old mother and her seven-year-old son died yesterday morning after their house was engulfed by fire.
Dead are Susan Bibi La Cruz and Ilyas Wilson of Good Hope, Essequibo Coast in Region Two.
According to reports, La Cruz and her children were in the upper flat of the building when the fire started at about 4:00 am. The fire quickly spread through the two-storey home and the woman and her son were trapped. . Eyewitnesses reported that the mother and son began screaming for help but the flames were too intense. The other five occupants managed to escape.
A neighbour, Arlene Burnette said she heard the occupants screaming for help.
Stabroek News was told that the house was owned by Ilene Wilson.
The dead woman’s husband, Andrew Wilson, and mother, Haimwattie Boodlall are both still in a state of shock.
“We spoke and then she went home with her children, my daughter is so nice and she take care of her children. Oh God I can’t take it, this is so tragic” the woman lamented.
Neighbours recounted that they heard the screams and saw smoke and immediately called the Anna Regina Fire Station. Fire tenders arrived on the scene but were unable to save anything. Everything in the house was destroyed including furniture, electrical appliances, clothing, and other personal items.
