A 25-year-old horse cart operator was stabbed to death on Monday night during an argument at a shop in Sophia.
Dead is 25-year-old Mark Harris, a father of four, of Lot 90 Plum Park, Sophia, Georgetown.
According to the police, the incident occurred at about 19.30 hours on Monday. The suspect and the victim were known to each other and had an ongoing issue. They were both at a shop in Plum Park when an argument ensued.
The victim who was allegedly armed with a knife, attempted to stab the suspect. He in turn, held on to the knife while removing a pair of scissors from his waist, and stabbed the victim twice to his body. The victim then ran off and collapsed a short distance away.
The suspect left the scene and proceeded to the Prashad Nagar Police Outpost, where he reported the incident and handed the scissors to the police. The victim was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor.
A knife without a handle was found at the scene. Several persons in the area were also questioned.
Harris’s uncle, Adrian Egerton, told Stabroek News that he was at home at about 19.45 hours when his neighbour called out to him informing that his nephew was lying in the street. He added that while he was leaving his yard, two other women came to him and suggested that he use his car instead since Harris had been stabbed. Upon arrival at the scene, he saw his nephew lying motionless on the street, his intestines were protruding and what appeared to be stab wounds could be observed on several parts of his body. He added that on their way to the hospital, Harris was gasping but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Egerton explained that Harris and the suspect had an ongoing problem which he thought had been resolved. He disclosed that he had previously counselled his nephew and the suspect to resolve the issue.
“I don’t think the guy know that my nephew was dead because he went to report the matter to the outpost and then police hold he there.”
