A nationwide limited overs tournament, featuring some 44 club teams is set to commence tomorrow following a launch yesterday.
The inaugural U23 Men’s Super-50 Club Championships was launched yesterday at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground, Bourda and is a collaboration of the Guyana Cricket Board and Republic bank Guyana Limited.
The objective of the tournament is to act as a bridge between the junior and senior levels, which will allow for an easier transition for youth players into the senior ranks.
The event commences tomorrow and will feature a total of 44 clubs.
Demerara will feature 21 club participating while Berbice and Essequibo will feature 16 and seven club teams respectively.
The Demerara zone will see 19 matches being contested while the Berbice and Essequibo segments will contain 18 and six matches respectively.
The winner of each division will advance to the national playoff. The respective county finals are penciled for September 1st, with the national championships set to commence on September 3rd.
Addressing the sizable gathering, GCB Secretary Ronald Williams, affirmed that the introduction of the new age group will foster and create a simpler transitional pathway for players leaving the junior ranks for the senior strata.
Meanwhile, Republic Bank Commercial Manager Harry Dass Ghaness stated that the entity is committed to the development of discipline and youth, which is evident by its long-standing 10-year partnership with the cricket authority, disclosing that the sport is part of the company’s social investment programme as it creates an enabling environment for the development of children.
He added that cricket affords its participants the avenue for the development of confidence, responsibility, and tenacity in a competitive setting, noting that the aforesaid traits are required in every aspect of life.
CB Manager of Cricket Operations, Anthony D’Andrade, stated that this pivotal age group provides the platform and avenue for players, who may have struggled and faced adversities at the U19 division, to continue their careers before entering the senior ranks.
