Fazal Mohammed, called ‘Wrong turn’ appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Friday where he was charged with simple larceny.
It is alleged that on August 11, at West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, Mohammed stole one electrical saw valued at $25,000, one music set valued at $65,000, one wrist watch valued $10,000, one pair of slippers valued at $5,000, and one bottle rum valued at $6,000, all belonging to Vincent DaSilva.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The court heard that Mohammed and DaSilva are known to each other. On the day in question at about 04.30 hours, DaSilva secured his home and went to work, leaving his father as the lone occupant. About 20.30 hours, he returned home and upon checking, realised that the aforementioned items were missing.
As a result, several persons in the area were questioned included the complainant’s father and information received, revealed that the defendant came into the house and took the articles. The matter was reported to the Ruimveldt Police Station and after further investigation, the defendant was arrested. Under caution he told police, “Officer I took the things and sell them ‘cause he owe me.” This statement prompted even further investigation and it was established that the complainant’s father owed the defendant $10,000.
Meanwhile, the court also heard that Mohammed had been charged in 2014 and 2019 for matters of a similar nature.
The police prosecutor objected to bail and the magistrate remanded the defendant.
Mohammed will make his next court appearance on September 29 for statements.
