Uitvlugt defeated fierce rival Pouderoyen by a 2-1 score when the West Demerara Football Association Senior Men’s League continued yesterday at the Tuschen ground.
Kevis Fraser handed Uitvlugt the initial lead with a 28th-minute conversion. Receiving the ball inside the six-yard box, Fraser made no mistake from a distance as he blasted the ball into the back of the net. Pouderoyen was then handed the perfect chance to level proceedings after being awarded a penalty following a wild challenge inside the box.
Tasked with the responsibility from a distance, the unusually assured Dwayne St. Kitts inexplicably fired his effort high over the crossbar, much to the dismay of his teammates. Consequently, the scores remained unchanged heading into the halftime interval.
However, Pouderoyen equalized in the form of Matthew Chidune, who found the back of the net in the 71st minute. A goalmouth scrimmage led to the conversion, as the Uitvlugt defensive line, following several last-ditch blocks and challenges, failed to clear the danger as the ball fell into the path of the forward, who slotted into the back of the net.
The equalizer was short-lived, as Sherlock Phillips etched his name on the scorer’s sheet two minutes later to restore Uitvlugt’s lead, slotting the ball past the goalkeeper from inside the penalty area after receiving a pass following a two-on-one situation.
Fraser was then shown a red card after receiving his second bookable offense in the 75th minute, reducing Uitvlugt to 10 players for the remainder of the contest. However, the Uitvlugt backline held firm to thwart the advances of Pouderoyen and secure the vital result.
Meanwhile, Uprising defeated the No. 1 All-Stars via walkover. The event continues today at the same venue with another round of matches.
