Logger gets one year in prison over ganja possession

Mark Hodge, a-twenty-six-year-old logger, (address not stated), appeared virtually at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly to answer to the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

It is alleged that on August 20, at Kwakwani Water Front, Upper Berbice River, the defendant had in his possession a narcotic that is to say 560 grams for the purpose of trafficking.

The court heard that police ranks conducted a search of the defendant’s person, but nothing illegal was found. However, during a search of his bag, police found a quantity of leaves, seed and stems suspected to be Cannabis inside the bag.

The accused admitted to purchasing the drugs from a man who lived higher up the Berbice River. The alleged drugs were then weighed in his presence and amounted to 560 grams. He was then placed into police custody.

The accused pleaded guilty to the charge that was read to him.

Following that, Magistrate Daly fined the defendant $30,000 and sentenced him to one year imprisonment.
