A man and a woman are in custody after they were caught attempting to smuggle cannabis into the Camp Street Prison.
It was reported that Shannon Chichester and Eon Jordan were arrested separately after the discovery was made by ranks of the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Prison Service. The two were attempting to have the items delivered to two inmates.
A Guyana Prison Service release stated that on Monday around 10.52 hours, Chichester arrived at the prison where according to procedure, the bag she was carrying was searched. The bag contained a quantity of toothpaste which was examined.
Upon inspection, ranks discovered in the tubes, a number of plastic parcels with leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis which amounted to 22 grammes. Chichester was subsequently placed under arrest.
Also, on Tuesday at about 12.50 hours, a routine search was conducted on Eon Jordan when he arrived at the Camp Street Prison. Ranks discovered a quantity of seeds, leaves and stems suspected to be cannabis secreted in two pairs of slippers. The cannabis amounted to 227 grammes. Jordan was arrested.
The suspects who are said to be cooperating with investigators are likely to be arraigned in court without delay.
The two attempts at smuggling prompted the Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot to emphasise that smuggling contraband into a correctional facility is a felony that has serious consequences.
He called on both prison officers and civilians to recognise the dangers at which they place themselves, society, and inmates, by engaging in the trade of contraband within the penitentiary’s walls.
