The first round of the Cricket West Indies Under-17 Regional two-day championship got underway yesterday with Guyana trailing Jamaica by 135 runs at stumps.
Playing at the National Cricket Centre, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica took first strike and posted 200 for nine declared in 53.2 overs. Guyana closed on 65 for two after 34 overs.
Off-spinner, Matthew Pottaya led the charge for Guyana with the ball, taking 3-32 while getting support from Bruce Vincent with 2-34.
Darwin Joseph, Jonathan Van Lange, Nicholas Shiopersaud and Romeo Deonarain chipped in with one wicket each.
Jamaica’s batting centered around Brian Barnes who stroked a well-composed 114 from 117 balls. Barnes smashed five sixes and 10 fours before being bowled by Vincent.
Jordan Pinnock made 22 while Kev’Aundre Virgo (18), David Dewar (16) and Roshawn McKenzie (15) were the other batsmen to reach double figures. McKenzie struck in the first over, removing Kevin Kisten for a second-ball duck. His opening partner, Deonarain is at the other end unbeaten on 33 from 100 balls. Deonarain has struck four boundaries so far and shared in a 47-run partnership with Rampersaud Ramnauth who made 21 from 49 balls. Deonarain is currently partnered with Shiopersaud at the crease who is on eight from 53 balls.
