Two brothers of murder victim Melissa Arokium are among four persons in custody over the gruesome attack on Wednesday that also claimed the life of her son, Anthony Arokium.
Police say an investigation is ongoing into the gruesome murder of the 31 year-old self-employed woman and her 8-year-old son, a pupil of Port Mourant Primary School. The mother and son lived at Lot 189 Mangrove Street, Rose Hall, Corentyne, Berbice.
The double-murder occurred between 06:30 hours and 13:30 hours on Wednesday.
The following persons were arrested and are assisting the police with the investigation:
1. The brother who resided with the victims – Serrana Arokium called ‘Foody’, a 33-year-old cane harvester.
2. The brother who discovered the body of the victims — Nicholas Arokium, called ‘Nico’, a 26-year-old vendor.
3. The boyfriend of the victim, Shailendra Umrao, a 37-year-old of Belvedere, Corentyne, Berbice.
4. The neighbour of the victim, Deo Naris, a 38-year-old ‘DJ’ of Mangrove Street, Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice.
Investigations so far indicated that Melissa sustained multiple chop wounds to the back of her neck, one wound to the left side of her waist and one chop wound to the left upper hand.
An examination conducted on the body of Anthony revealed he had several chop wounds to the right side of his body, head and face.
The bodies are at Arokium’s Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Investigations are ongoing.
