Twenty-eight-year-old Hakeem Douglas, of 437 Eccles, East Bank Demerara, and Anthony Adams, 28, of Kwakwani, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly where they were jointly charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
Both pleaded not guilty to the charge.
It is alleged that the defendants on August 23, while being together, at Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, had in their possession 54.839 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
The court heard that on the day in question at about 08:10 hours, police ranks acting on intelligence, intercepted a white Honda Vezel, PZZ 8911. The vehicle was driven by Douglas with Adams as a passenger. The driver was instructed to proceed to the Ruimveldt Police Station, which he did. On arrival, the vehicle was searched in the presence of the two men and during the process, a black plastic bag containing suspected cannabis was found on the rear seat. A further search revealed a bulky parcel found to contain leaves, seeds and stems.
The defendants were told of the allegation against them, arrested, and escorted to CID Headquarters, along with the cannabis, which when weighed in their presence amounted to 54.839 grammes.
The police prosecutor strongly objected to bail based on the quantity of cannabis found, the seriousness and prevalence of the offence and the fact that the defendants admitted possession.
Bail was refused.
The two are scheduled to make their next court appearance on September 15 for statements.
