After confessing to concealing 22 grammes of cannabis in several toothpaste tubes and boxes, a woman was yesterday given a six-month prison sentence.

Channon Chichester, 28, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly where she was charged with attempting to smuggle narcotics into a penal facility.

It was alleged that on August 21, at Lot 12 Camp Street, Georgetown the defendant had in her possession 22 grammes of narcotics with the intent to smuggle it into the Camp Street Prison.

The court heard that Chichester arrived at the prison and was stopped by ranks for a routine search. In one of her bags, officers found a quantity of plastic parcels containing seeds, leaves and stems suspected to be cannabis hidden in several toothpaste boxes and toothpaste tubes. The cannabis when weighed amounted to 22 grammes.

Chichester begged the court to be lenient with her since she has three sons to look after, ages nine, eight and six.

Following her guilty plea, she was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.
