The “Keep Ya Five Alive” Futsal Championship final between Bent Street and Sparta Boss was abandoned on Saturday evening with less than seven minutes on the clock as a brawl erupted amongst spectators in the southern stand during the first half at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
The melee, which was ignited following a confrontation between two spectators, occurred at 1:30 am with 9:37 remaining on the clock in the first half of the 30-minute encounter and the score locked at 0-0. The match was officially abandoned by the referees at 1:34 am.
It was the second episode of a scuffle igniting in the southern stands after a fracas occurred 20 minutes earlier in the women’s final which forced a 10-minute stoppage.
The tournament organizers stated that a decision on the way forward for the competition will be announced shortly. The event, which had a visible police presence, and was witnessed by a mammoth crowd, was sanctioned by the Guyana Football Federation (GFF).
Prior to the unfortunate episode, the Guyana Police Force edged Fruta Conquerors 3-2 in the women’s final. Also, Gold is Money dismissed Back Circle 3-0 in the men’s third-place playoff.
