Powerlifter Carlos Peterson-Grifith returned to the local platform yesterday and chalked up another top-of-the-podium performance at the Raw National Championships staged at the National Gymnasium
Petterson-Grifith, lifting in the 105kg class, showed his strength prowess without the assistance of lifting equipment, with a mammoth squat of 310kg and a bench press of 165kg.
On his way to earning the overall title with the leading IPF points, the 29-year-old set a national record in the deadlift, easily pulling 350kg off the mat. His total of 825kg was also the national record for the class.
Following his exploits, Peterson-Grifith, who recorded several podium finishes at the World Classic Powerlifting Championships staged in Malta in June, stated that he has his sights set on more international events next year following the National Senior Championships in December.
Female best lifter, Keisha Abrigo (76kg) was also in sublime form yesterday. She had a great day on the platform with her lifts 162.5kg (squat), 75kg (bench press), 200kg (deadlift) and 437.5kg (total).
Abrigo’s IPF points was tops amongst the five female competitors.
According to reports, Demetri Chan, (74kg), Wazeer Hussain (93kg junior) and 71-year-old Frank Tucker also recorded national record breaking performances.
The National Sports Commission, the Ministry of Sport, Fitness Express, Space Gym, and Chung’s Global Inc. were among the major sponsors of the event which was dubbed a success by the federation’s President, Franklin Wilson.
