Nine players from Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica departed local shores yesterday en route to Barbados where they will join the rest of the Guyana Amazon Warriors Women’s team for the upcoming Massy Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL).
Among them were captain, Stafanie Taylor, Karishma Ramharack, Djenaba Joseph, Ashmini Munisar, Shemaine Campbelle, Sheneta Grimmond, Shabika Gajnabi, Cherry-Ann Fraser and Kaysia Schultz.
At the Eugine F. Correia International Airport, Ogle, Taylor spoke to the media prior to departure and revealed that the recent stint in Guyana was memorable.
“To see the chairman, [Dr.] Bobby Ramroop put a lot of effort into it to get us here and meet with the President [Dr. Irfaan Ali] is really good. I didn’t know how funny he is until I met him so it’s been really well. We were also able to visit Shaheed’s Girls home and I am hoping we can win the tournament this year,” she declared.
Speaking on the preparation leading up to the tournament, the skipper said, “Preparations so far have been really good. Last year was a bit impromptu but this year was better in terms of preparation. The girls were able to train with the guys and we are looking forward to this year,” she added.
With the likes of Suzie Bates, Sophie Devine, Shabnim Ismail and Shreyanka Patil among their overseas contingent, Tayor reckoned she was looking forward to positive results.
“We have new overseas players who are on the world stage so we are looking forward to positive results. I think the team is quite balanced which I am really happy about and I can’t say if our strength is batting or bowling but I am happy we are quite balanced,” she said.
The tournament begins on August 31 in Barbados with Warriors women taking on Barbados Royals.
