The United States has highlighted the importance of the role of the media here saying that it is essential to this country’s sustainability and transparency.
“I do want to start out by thanking all of the members of the media corps for your wonderful cooperation and excellent partnership over the years. You all serve a crucial and important function in any strong democracy, and you are absolutely essential to Guyana’s sustainable and transparent growth in the coming years,” outgoing US Ambassador Sarah-Ann Lynch on Thursday told a press conference hosted by the embassy.
It is not the first time that the role of the media in maintaining a strong democracy has been highlighted by western nations.
Last year, the work of journalists was lauded by western envoys as they pledged continued support.
Lynch had emphasised then that journalists must be able to ask tough questions to inform the public and have access to the authorities.
Media freedom, she posited, is a cornerstone of democratic societies and is essential to the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
