Forty-three-year-old Shane James, a security officer and resident of Lot 55 La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday where he was charged with fraud.
It was alleged that between July 24 and July 31, James obtained cash in the sum of $200,000 in two parts, from Yonnel Saunders to purchase materials to repair her staircase. However, he later told Saunders that he would not be able to do the work since he no longer had the money.
James told the magistrate that he and Saunders are not well acquainted and that he does not know her place of residence. However, Saunders told the court that James visited her home before and that was when he told her that her steps needed repairs, and gave her the estimate for $200,0000.
Saunders in turn contended said she gave James the cash to purchase materials to rebuild the steps, and he converted it to his own personal use. He pleaded not guilty to the charge, and was placed on $100,000 bail
James next scheduled court date is October 13.
