The body of boat captain Regan Rodriguez, who went missing after a collision between two vessels on the Pomeroon River on Thursday afternoon, was recovered yesterday morning.
In a statement, the police said that Jermaine Seegobin, a 38-year-old farmer, reported that he and other family members were in the Pomeroon River in search of Rodriguez when they saw the body of a man floating on his back in the vicinity of Charity Waterfront on the western side of the Pomeroon River.
As a result, contact was made with the Police and the body was pulled from the water.
Seegobin identified the body as his uncle, Rodriguez, by the clothing, wristwatch, and finger ring. The partially decomposed body was escorted to Suddie Public Hospital’s Mortuary, awaiting a Post-Mortem Examination.
The police had said on Thursday that Andel Garraway, a 23-year-old licensed boat captain, was the lone occupant in a wooden Balahoo, measuring 21 feet in length by 8 feet in width and powered by a 250 Hp Yamaha outboard engine. The Balahoo was proceeding from the Charity Wharf to Grant Phoenix Park, Lower Pomeroon River when it hit another wooden Balahoo (measuring 14 feet in length by 4 feet in width and powered by a 5 Hp Yahama engine.
The smaller vessel was captained by Rodriguez, a 40-year-old farmer of Charity Housing Scheme, who was proceeding North in the Pomeroon River.
According to Garraway, who went to the Charity Police Station and reported the incident, he was proceeding south on the river when he collided with the said boat, causing Regan Rodriguez to capsize and fall overboard into the Pomeroon River.
Garraway claimed he did not see the smaller boat and just felt an impact. Looking in the water, Garraway said he saw a hat and a small boat with the engine ‘tilt up’.
