Jarrel Barker, 21, of Lot 3585 Tuschen, West Demerara, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Magistrate Rhondell Weever to answer to a false pretence charge that was read to him.
It is alleged that on Thursday 31st August, 2023, at Water Street, Georgetown, with intent to defraud, the defendant obtained the sum of $600,000 from Shahim Baksh by falsely pretending to him that he was in a position to sell him a motor car knowing same to be false.
The court heard that on 13th August, 2023, the VC saw an advertisement on “What’s for sale Guyana”, that a motorcar was on sale at the cost of $600,000. The VC then made contact with the defendant via “What’s for sale Guyana”.
The following day the VC met with the defendant and handed over the $600,000 at Muneshwer’s Wharf and told the VC that he was going onto the wharf to collect the car.
The defendant then entered the wharf and exited through another area and escaped. The VC tried making contact with the defendant but was unsuccessful. The matter was then reported and an investigation sting was launched.
The VC later made contact with the same defendant on the ‘What’s for sale Guyana”. The defendant told the VC to take along $600,000 to obtain the said vehicle. Upon meeting up, the defendant was arrested, cautioned and under caution he admitted to the police.
Following his guilty plea, Magistrate Weever asked the defendant if he has intentions to repay the VC his money and he responded by saying “I was gonna return the money today, I have to go to the bank and I have to make some calls.”
Barker was then ordered by Magistrate Weever to repay the VC through the court on 8th September at 9:00 am.
The matter was adjourned to 8th September.
