The Promenade Gardens, open to the public from its inception, is now the source of criticism on social media platform, Facebook with members of the public saying they are being denied access to the facility.
Stabroek News visited the gardens yesterday. Upon entry and after speaking with the security guard, we were informed that the garden is indeed closed to the public. However, the security guard also inquired about the intended duration of stay. After stating that it was for about an hour, we were told that although closed to the public, individuals on their lunch break are allowed to enter the gardens for no longer than 30 minutes.
While inside the gardens, Stabroek News spoke to several sources, who disclosed that the Mayor and City Council had implemented a new strategy. Those wishing to use the park for photoshoots, weddings, or any major events must submit an application and pay a fee to use the garden as a venue. Another source within the facility expressed confusion about why the garden is closed to the public and mentioned that it has been like this for quite some time. It was also reported that the number of gardeners in the facility had been drastically reduced.
To address the question of why the public is being denied access, Stabroek News attempted to contact the Mayor of Georgetown Alfred Mentore via cellphone, but the calls were unanswered.
Stabroek News then reached out to the City Engineer and a city councillor. Both denied having knowledge of a closure and were under the impression that the area was open for public use, with restrictions only applying to events requiring an application to use the gardens, submitted to the City Council.
An investigation into the matter has been launched. (Mia Anthony)
