A Brazilian mechanic, Walter Oliveira, 49, who was reported missing after an accident involving a boat on Friday around 18:00 hours at Suriname Landing, Middle Mazaruni River, Region Seven, has been found dead. His body was found yesterday morning by police.
Regional Commander, Senior Superintendent Dion Moore, told the Sunday Stabroek yesterday that Oliveira’s body was found yesterday morning and is at the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home.
Investigations revealed that Oliveira travelled from Kumung Kumung, Puruni River, with his co-worker, Gerson DaSilva, to do some work at Suriname Landing for Francisca Leite. At 17.40 hours on Friday, Oliveira completed the job and borrowed Leite’s 15-foot aluminum boat to return some tools he had borrowed from a camp about 10 minutes away along the Mazaruni River.
At the time, Oliveira was the sole occupant of the boat and according to an eyewitness in the area of Suriname Landing, he heard a loud impact and upon checking, saw the boat spinning in the water and a man shouting for help.
An alarm was raised and checks were made in the area for Oliveira, but he could not be found. The matter was reported to the police who continued the search.
