Ashram Boodhoo, 50, also known as ‘Socks’, of Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara who was beaten in the head by his friend over a joke at a birthday party on July 3, died on Thursday after being discharged from the Infectious Diseases Hospital on August 20.
The regional commander of Division 4 ‘C’, Superintendent Krishna Ramana, told the Sunday Stabroek yesterday via telephone that sometime in July, Boodhoo attended his friend’s wife’s birthday party that took place somewhere in Non Pareil and the two men were imbibing alcohol. However, at the party the friend’s wife made a joke to her husband. As a result of the joke, the husband became annoyed and struck Boodhoo in the head.
The man was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital and was later transferred to the Infectious Diseases Hospital from where he was discharged on August 20 as there was no improvement in his condition. He was totally paralyzed and could only move his eyes. After Boodhoo’s discharge from the hospital, relatives reported to the police that he died on Thursday.
According to the Commander, several attempts have been made to locate the suspect but they have been unsuccessful so far. However, he assured that the search is still ongoing.
The victim’s sister, Hermilla Boodhoo, told this newspaper that after the incident, her brother underwent surgery for the injuries sustained to his head. After the operation, she was told that he had sustained severe brain injuries which left him paralysed. He was transferred to the Infectious Diseases Hospital for further treatment but there was no improvement in his condition and he was discharged on August 20 and subsequently died.
