Buxton Stars climbed atop the East Coast Demerara Football Association Senior Men’s League following a walkover victory against Haslington All-Stars on Friday evening.
Staged at the Buxton Community Centre ground, the hosts secured the victory without breaking a sweat after Haslington failed to take the playing surface in the stipulated time set by the presiding officials. Due to the unfortunate outcome, Buxton Stars were awarded a 2-0 victory and three points due to the absence of Haslington.
Buxton Stars coach Sherry Abrams stated during an invited comment that she is very saddened that the match was not staged, as it would have provided an opportunity for the team to increase its goal differential given that Haslington is one of the weaker teams in the competition.
She explained, “I am very disappointed because of the fact that Haslington is one of the weakest teams in the league, and we wanted to capitalize and score goals and improve our goal difference but had to settle for two goals and three points. The whole team was disappointed; everyone was disappointed that the game was not played.”
The event will continue tomorrow night at the same venue with a doubleheader. At 19:00hrs, Mahaica will oppose Victoria Scorpions, while Airy Hall will take aim at Dynamic FC at 21:00hrs.
