Prospect, Travis Sancho and the Rose Hall Jammers (RHJ) Gym earned the marquee trophies when the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) staged its Pepsi/Mike Parris U-16 tournament yesterday at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Gym.
Sancho, a standout from Rose Hall, triumphed with a points’ victory over a game Wayne Castillo to earn the coveted best boxer award at the event.
In one of the most exciting bouts on the card, the 13 year-old and his opponent threw punches in bunches, much to the jubilation of the small but raucous crowd that circled the ring.
However, at the end of three exciting rounds, the judges awarded the slick southpaw another ‘W’ to his record.
The boxers and the gym from the Ancient County collectively stole the show however and tallied four points on the eight-fight card to lift the Best Gym trophy ahead of runner up, Forgotten Youth Foundation Gym which finished with two points.
Other winners yesterday included: Dreshawn Willery, Ken Harvey, Curtis McDonald, Ryan Rogers, Marlando Cameron and Best best at the Caribbean School Boys and Juniors Champion-ships, Tiquan Sampson.
There was also an exhibition bout involving sisters, Tofina and Maria Barker.
At the conclusion of the event, Gregory Cort, Head Coach of the RHJ gym, was announced as the winner of the Best Coach award.
According to Technical Director of the GBA, Terrence Poole, the next event carded will be the Andrew Lewis National Novices Championships. That event is tentatively set for the National Gymnasium at a date to be announced.
