Hindus must be allowed to observe this festival without hindrance

Dear Editor,

I have been following the controversial story of the wearing of Rakhi in Guyana schools. The Rakhi is a sacred symbol of a bond between a sister and brother and Raksha Bandhan is one of the most celebrated and observed Hindu festivals observed by 1.2 billion Hindus across the world, including Guyana. Hindus must be allowed to observe this festival without hindrance and must be allowed to wear the Rakhi with pride at home, at work and in schools and other learning establishments.

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, wears his Raksh Sutra permanently as a Hindu and is very proud to do so. Now that the Government is propagating ONE GUYANA this is the time to regularise many religious and cultural discrepancies. I applaud the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabah under Dr. Vindya Persaud for highlighting such an important issue that requires attention at the highest level and establishment of a National Policy.

Sincerely,

Pandit Ramesh Charan
