A dominating performance from Stella Maris Primary School underscored by a 10-wicket win over F.E. Pollard Primary School saw them winning the inaugural Future Warriors tapeball tournament sponsored by ExxonMobil.
At the Guyana Defence Force ground, Camp Ayanganna, F.E. Pollard won the toss and opted to bat in the final but managed just 46 for two from their allotted eight overs. Stella Maris needed just three overs to reach their target of 48 as Brandon Frank smashed three sixes and two fours in his 10-ball 28 not out. Tafari Softleigh finished unbeaten on 19 from eight balls, hitting two sixes and one four.
F.E. Pollard’s innings was steered by Devante Primo who made 39 not out from 24 balls. His innings was highlighted by eight boundaries.
Earlier, Stella Maris defeated F.E. Pollard by 64 runs in the opening match of the day as the tournament saw three teams entering the round-robin stage after the knockout rounds the previous day.
Softleigh struck the highest score of the tournament, 63 not out, as Stella Maris reached 103 without loss. The left-hander’s 29-ball innings featured five sixes and four boundaries while Frank made 33 not out from 19 balls. F.E. Pollard responded with 39 for five with Softleigh taking 3-4 from his two overs.
ExxonMobil’s Community Relations Advisor, Leonard (Ryan) Hoppie, during the presentation spoke highly of the enthusiasm and passion displayed by the teams in the competition and commended the teachers, students and organisers for a well-executed tournament.
Stella Maris also brushed aside St. Pius by 23 runs after posting 49 for four and restricting St. Pius to 26 for eight with Nicoli Hawker taking 3-2 and Ashawn Collins bagging 2-8.
St. Pius would end the day without a win after losing to F.E. Pollard by three runs. F.E. Pollard posted 55 for two with Primo scoring 32 from 18 balls and Keon Billey making 10 while St. Pius mustered 52 for four as Marrio Angus top scored with 25 not out and Tristan Brandt chipping in with 14.
In the individual prizes, Softleigh copped the highest individual score as well as the most runs, ending with 135 runs from five innings. Christian Seenauth also bagged two prizes, taking the best bowling figures of the competition (5-16) and ending with the most wickets (seven).
