AAG sets tentative dates to hold National C/ships

Athletes get ready, September 29-October 1 is the tentative time period set by the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) to host its flagship National Seniors Championships. 

This is according to President (acting) of the association, Sheryl Hermonstine.

Hermonstine told this publication yesterday, that the AAG wrote to the National Sports Commission (NSC) yesterday seeking permission to stage the statutory event at the National Track and Field Centre at Edinburg.

Currently, repair works to the tune of $78M are ongoing at the edifice and according to Director of Sport, Steve Ninvalle, the works should be completed by Friday barring inclement weather.Ninvalle, who visited the facility on Friday and met with Deitmar Jakel, the technician from BSW Regupol, stated in an invited comment that, “The repairs at the track are almost complete.”

While at the facility, Ninvalle also inspected the ongoing works which were ongoing for quite some time.

When the championships is staged, it is expected to attract the cream of the nation’s track and field stars like CAC gold medalist, Emanuel Archibald, national javelin record holder, Leslain Baird, field standout, Chantoba Bright, middle distance maestro, Marlon Nicholson and others.

Hermonstine also reminded that the Inter Guiana Games (IGG) Trials for 18 and Under athletes will be held on Saturday at the Police Progressive Youth Club.

The trials will be used to select the national team to represent Guyana at the Games scheduled to be held in Suriname from October 26-31. 

Thirteen males and 13 females will form Guyana’s athletic team. 

The meet is scheduled to be highlighted by track prodigy, Tianna Springer, Malachi Austin, Narissa McPherson and Javon Roberts, the gold medal, history making mixed 4x400m quartet that competed at the Commonwealth Youth Games last month in Trinidad.
