Guyana’s table tennis star Shemar Britton will have to wait until possibly today to face off with the United States of America’s Jishan Liang in their round of 32 encounter at the ongoing International Table Tennis Federation’s Pan American Championships in Havana, Cuba.
According to reports reaching Stabroek Sports there was no play yesterday and all the matches were postponed until today.
The Executive Committee of ITTF Americas yesterday issued a statement on the matter.
“Due to unforeseen situations unrelated to ITTF Americas, that occurred during the ITTF Pan American Championships Havana, today’s journey has been temporarily suspended until the organisers can guarantee the proper functioning of the event.
“ITTF Americas, together with the actors involved, is working with the objective of offering our athletes, coaches judging staff and delegates, an event that meets the standards imposed in the Organisational Guidelines,” the statement from ITTF Americas read. Guyana’s Britton, after a hard fought 4-3 win over Peru’s Jeisson Martinez where he came back from 0-3 down to win a seven game thriller, 5-11, 9-11, 4-11, 11-8, 13-11, 11-6, 11-6 was scheduled to play Liang yesterday but all the matches were cancelled.
Liang, like Britton a southpaw, took Puerto Rico’s Bryan Afanador to five games last month in a WTT men’s singles qualifier in Lima, Peru and as such Britton will have his work cut out if he is to advance to the last 16.
