A home at Lot 13 Sixth Street, Industry, East Coast Demerara was gutted by fire on Sunday night.
Reports are that around 11 pm, the home, which was being rented by two persons, had two individuals in both the upper and lower flat when it went up in flames.
Shalini, the landlord’s daughter, told this newspaper that her family is just as shocked. She related that the tenant of the upper flat told her that he had lit the stove and gone on his phone for a few minutes. Upon returning to the kitchen, he discovered that the bottom of the stove had caught on fire. He attempted to extinguish the flames by throwing water, however, that caused the fire to spread even more. The tenant of the upper flat of the home declined to comment on the issue.
Stabroek News also spoke to Fire Chief Gregory Wickham, who said that the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
