Under public pressure over the steep rise in road deaths, the Guyana Police Force says its Traffic Department across all Regional Divisions, under the leadership of Senior Superintendent Mahendra Singh, made more than 1,000 cases during the last three days of enforcement exercises.
In a release yesterday, the police said that on Sunday, September 10th, 2023, 377 cases were made; on Monday, Sep-tember 11th, 2023, 358 cases were made and for Tuesday, September 12th, 2023, 315 cases were made.
“The committed efforts by the Traffic Department have been intensified to curb motorists’ poor and reckless usage of the road. Traffic ranks across all divisions have been engaging daily in countrywide empowerment sessions and road safety lectures”, the release said.
Up to August 28th this year, the number of traffic deaths skyrocketed by 60.2% compared to the same period last year.
Fatal accidents up to the same date this year have jumped by 46.77% compared to last year’s figure.
The police force revealed that from January 1 to August 28, 2023, a total of 109 persons lost their lives in 91 accidents. For the same period in 2022, the Ministry of Public Works said that there were 62 fatal accidents, which resulted in 68 deaths.
