Another incident of violence unfolded at New Campbellville Secondary School last week when a 12-year-old schoolgirl was brutally assaulted by her classmates.
The incident has since sparked outrage in the community and prompted the victim’s parents to seek intervention from the Ministry of Education to ensure justice and safety within the school.
In a video seen by Stabroek News, circulating on social media, the girl, whose identity is being protected for her safety, was sitting at her desk in her classroom which was apparently unsupervised at the time. One of the girl’s classmates confronted her and dealt her several blows to the head while laughing.
Parents and concerned community members have expressed their shock and dismay over the incident on social media and are pleading with the Ministry for more preventative actions to be taken in schools.
One parent commented and said, “It’s heartbreaking to see something like this happen to a child. Schools should be a safe space for our children to learn and grow, and incidents like these are unacceptable.”
The victim’s parents told this newspaper that they have since been engaging with the Ministry which is taking steps to have the child taken care of.
The incident has reignited discussions about the need for comprehensive anti-bullying mechanisms and stricter actions to be taken at schools.
Last week, a boy from New Campbelville Secondary School severely beat another boy from the school. That child had to seek medical care and is experiencing blackouts.
