The local, privately run Human Resources institution, the JTW Training Institute will stage its third Human Resource Conference for 2023 , its aim being to focus national attention on the desirability of ventilating and seeking solutions to workplace issues On Friday October 29, seeking in the course of the exercise to focus attention on ventilating workplace issues that have a bearing on the health and wellness of workers.
A release from the JTW Secretariat in Georgetown says that the focus of the forum will be to seek to realize “a continuum between the workers wellness endeavors at home, and those at work.” The forum further seeks to ensure that participants “leave with an understanding of ………some of the key issues in the workplace that affect the health and wellness of workers.” JTW says that this year it will be bringing together experts on human resources management whose contributions to the forum will focus on “critical issues” relating to health and wellness including in Guyana, in both the public and private sectors including “trends in wellness in Guyana, expanding wellness initiatives in the private sector, compensation and wellness, childcare and wellness, work life balance, workplace relationships and wellness in interior locations.”
According to the release the JTW’s initiative comes against the backdrop of “an increase in stress and mental health issues” and these maladies finding their way into workplaces, impacting on workplace productivity. “We want to ensure that our practices in the workplace do not negatively affect wellness but positively impact on the wellness indicators of our human resources,” the release says.
Workplace wellness practices, the release says, embrace health promotion activities or policies that support positive employee health and behavior. It notes that Workplace Wellness policies in some countries embrace, among other things, “medical screenings, health education fairs, fitness programmes and healthcare memberships. Companies that invest in workplace wellness initiatives customarily parade the benefits associated with workplace wellness institutional workplace wellness regimes.” Mindful of workplace wellness in Guyana, particularly where this relates to occupational safety and health anomalies at both private and public sector workplaces has been known to be a subject of controversy.
