Retired race-walking legend and athletic enthusiast William France passed away on Tuesday in Sophia, Georgetown, at the age of 66.
France, who was locally known as ‘William the Conqueror’, competed at several local and international marathons. This included the world-renowned New York, Boston, and London Marathons, while he also competed in events in Trinidad and Tobago.
France, who became an amputee after losing his right leg, was a recipient of the Medal of Service and Walter Rodney Awards. He also etched his name in the annals of the Guinness Book of Records for his contributions and achievements as an athlete.
