Diversity and the crowd in the stands

Dear Editor,

Now that CPL is over and the Amazon Warriors have been crowned champions in their sixth outing in the finals, I hereby offer my congratulations to them. They have made Guyana proud.

However, while the Warriors were demonstrating the uniqueness of our diversity, on and off the field, the crowds in the stand were saying something else. At least that is the impression I got watching the action on Facebook on my laptop more than 300 miles away.

Every time the cameras panned the crowds all I was seeing were East Indian fans with a smattering of other peoples. The matches in the Guyana leg were played during Heritage month and there was hardly a mention of that fact. I did not see anywhere during the matches, a demonstration of our Amerindian culture.

The impression any first-time observer would have had, judging from the crowds, is that Guyana is predominantly East Indian and that is far from the truth.

What was demonstrated there certainly is not a reflection of the One Guyana the government wants us to believe that exists; but rather a Guyana for one set of people.

I hope it is just not me who has noticed this.

Yours sincerely,

Carl Parker.
