One of two men who had been accused of raping a 15-year-old girl, is now awaiting sentencing after a jury found him guilty as charged of sexually assaulting the teenager back in 2020.
Melroy Barry of Anns Grove, East Coast Demerara, will be returning to court on October 17th for sentencing.
While the 12-member jury convicted Barry, it was divided regarding the guilt of his co-accused, Calvin Reid.
Justice Jo-Ann Barlow who conducted the trial, has deferred Barry’s sentencing, setting it for October 17th to first hear from probation and other social impact reports.
Barry called “Satan” and Reid, called “Callo,” both masons of Anns Grove village, were charged with raping the teen on January 7th, of 2020.
The prosecution’s case against them was that the girl was taken to a house where the two took turns raping her.
A police report was subsequently made and the duo was later arrested and charged.
Barry was represented by attorney Tamieka Clarke; while Reid was represented by attorney Teriq Mohammed.
Meanwhile the State was represented by prosecutor Latifah Elliot.
The trial proceedings were held in-camera at the Sexual Offences Court of the High Court in Georgetown.
