All systems are in place for the staging of the 2023 iteration of the Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis National Novice Boxing Championship tonight, following the official weigh-in procedures yesterday by the Guyana Boxing Association at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
In excess of 50 boxers from several gyms, including the defending champion Guyana Defence Force (GDF), the Guyana Police Force, the Forgotten Youth Foundation, Pace and Power, Rose Hall, and Vergenoegen, will feature in the three-day championship, which concludes on Sunday evening. The GDF unit has the largest contingent, with 21 fighters.
Meanwhile, the Republican Boxing Gym will be making their return to the fight scene following a five-year hiatus with an 11-member roster. The popular fighting stable will be coached by national tactician Lennox Daniels, who, under the auspices of the GBA, has been working assiduously with the group at the Lusignan Prison Facility, East Coast Demerara.
Terrence Poole, Technical Director of the GBA, said, “Everything is in place; we had the medical assessment and the weigh-ins, and everything went well. We are looking at three grueling nights of action and a very competitive tournament.”
The championship, which is staged in honor of the former world champion, who unfortunately died on May 4th, 2015, in a vehicular accident, birthed the journey of numerous of the nation’s leading premier amateur pugilists.
