The Block 42 Amelia’s Ward, Linden woman believed to have been beaten to death by her reputed husband at her home on September 13th 2023, died as a result of poisoning. This is according to Regional Deputy Commander of Division Ten Guy Nurse, who told Stabroek News ‘last’ Monday that the death of Bibi Shirah Bhagpattie, 53, was still under investigation by the police.
According to the police, enquiries disclosed that Bhagpattie and her reputed husband, a 55-year-old farmer, resided in a one-storey wooden home where they would normally have arguments during which he would assault Bhagpattie.
On September 12th around 13:00 hrs, the suspect claimed that Bhagpattie had removed $500 from his pants’ pocket, unknown to him, to buy alcohol. The suspect told the police that he confronted Bhagpattie about the money, and a heated argument ensued during which she chucked him in the chest. The suspect admitted that he became annoyed and dealt Bhagpattie a slap and a punch to her face, causing her to sustain injuries. She then went to her relatives’ home and told them what transpired, but later returned to her Amelia’s Ward home.
The next day, around 16:30 hrs, the suspect contacted one of Bhagpattie’s relatives and informed her that Bhagpattie was not moving. The relative went to the house where she observed Bhagpattie lying on her back, half-naked, with a towel wrapped around her. The relative immediately alerted other family members, and reported the matter to the police. When the woman’s body was examined, her face was black and blue and swollen.
She was taken to the Mackenzie Hospital Complex, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
