The West Demerara Football Association Senior Men’s League fixture between Slingerz and Uitvlugt yesterday was abandoned by the referees following an argument that erupted between the lead official, spectators and members of the Slingerz technical area and bench.
At the time of the stoppage, 65 minutes had elapsed in the 80-minute encounter, with defending champion and league leader Slingerz commanding a sizable 3-0 advantage at the Tuschen ground.
The spat ignited after Leo Lovell of Slingerz was issued his second yellow card for alleged dissent, which produced a red card from the official and led to his expulsion. Red cards were also issued to substitute Delon Lanferman and assistant coach O’Neil Heywood in the subsequent verbal spat that was immediately triggered by Lovell’s dismissal.
The escalating quarrel led to the officials abandoning the fixture. A decision is expected to be instituted by the tournament organizers on the episode.
Prior to the stoppage, Sheldon Holder opened the scoring in the third minute, slotting into the right side of the net from inside the 18-yard box after receiving a cross from the left side.
His second conversion, which completed the brace in the 14th minute, mirrored the first as he slammed his effort into the back of the net from inside the penalty area after latching onto another left-sided cross.
The final conversion occurred two minutes later through Lennox Younge, who slotted into the left corner after an initial strike from Holder was spilt by the goalkeeper fortuitously into his onrushing path.
Meanwhile, Eagles clawed past Wales 2-1. David Chisolm recorded the opening goal of the match in the 31st minute to hand Eagles the lead. The score remained unchanged heading into the halftime interval.
Shaquille King then doubled the advantage via a 50th-minute conversion. For the loser, Lexroy Mansfield
