Young sprint sensation Nolex Holder established himself as Guyana’s leading senior male sprinter by blazing his way to the sprint double at the Athletics Association of Guyana’s (AAG) National Senior Championships last weekend.
Tianna Springer, the 16-year-old made even more strides in asserting herself as one of the country’s top female track and field stars. Holder, who continues to impress, added the men’s 200m to the 100m event he won last Friday winning in 21.07 seconds, just pipping Guyana Defence Force’s Shamar Horatio (21.08 seconds) with the latter’s club mate Akeem Stewart closing out the podium in 21.18s.
Over in the men’s 400m, GDF’s Simeon Adams strode home without much competition to take the gold in 49.19 seconds with Joshua Lam and youngster Malachi Austin having to settle for joint second place after finishing in a tie with a time of 49.56 seconds.
Nicholas Daw took home the 800m men’s gold in two minutes .41 seconds. After his gold medal exploits in the 400m final, Adams had to settle for second this time around in two minutes.70 seconds with Javon Roberts sealing third place in two minutes.80 seconds.
Among the females, Springer showed great maturity for her age as she held her composure to cross the line in 24.19 seconds for gold in the 200m. Keliza Smith trailed in her wake to take silver (24.24 seconds) while Annalisa Redmond finished third in 24.79 seconds.
Springer was hugely impressive again in the 400m stopping the clock at 55.31 seconds ahead of Smith (55.78 seconds) and Narissa McPherson (56.09 seconds). However, Mc Pherson rebounded in the 800m final crossing the line in two minutes 37.65 seconds to win gold. Jelicia Wright (two minutes 40.19 seconds) and Delicia Tinnis (two minutes 51.95 seconds) finished second and third respectively.
In the field events, Guyana’s men’s javelin record holder, Leslain Baird was well below his best but still copped gold with a best throw of 69.94m. Jemain Simmons threw 59.65m for silver, while Kleon Spellen (55.80m) was third.
Tanisha Cort (35.84m) was by some distance the best in the women’s javelin event winning the event with Shontell Browne (30.73m) second and Sasha James third with a 28.44m throw.
Annalesa Redmond leapt 5.46m in the women’s long jump event to take home gold.
Tasnica Lovell managed 5.00m for dilver with Tonya Rawlins (4.54m) was third.
In the men’s long jump, Anthony Williams (7.26m) held off competition from Eron Leitch (7.05m) to stand on top of the podium while Nicholas Crandon (6.90m) was good enough for bronze.
