Seaton dominates Torpedo Club’s Open water swim meet

One of Guyana’s leading young male swimmers, Leon Seaton, held off a field of 23 swimmers to clinch first place overall when the Torpedo Swim Club pulled off its 3KM Open Water Swim Meet in Linden Sunday last. 

The meet, which was open to seven age categories, attracted swimmers in the 13-14 years, 15-17 years, 18 & over and one athlete (a 62-year old male) in the Masters category.

The Open water course began from De Jong’s Boat landing on the Mackenzie Shore, moved to Catapuli Creek (opposite Speightland) and returned to De Jong’s Boat landing on the Wismar Shore.

Seaton, a member of the Silver Shark Swim Club, clocked 50 minutes and 22 seconds to clinch the overall win ahead of Elliot Gonsalves (Sea Otters Swim Club) who stopped the clock at 50 minutes and 28 seconds for second. Gonsalves’ clubmate Ethan Gonsalves managed third place some distance behind in 50 minutes and 56 seconds while Sekhel Tzedeq (Dolphin Swim Club) was fourth in 55 minutes and 58 secondss.   Ariel Rodrigues (Orca Swim Club) who finished fifth overall and first for the females clocked a respectable time of 56 minutes and 36.7 seconds.  She was followed by Patrice Mahaica (Dolphin Swim Club) who was sixth overall and second in the female category with a time of 57 minutes and 23.6 seconds.  In the 13-14 year-old Male Category, 13-year-old Ricardo Spencer of the Torpedo Club nabbed gold in one hour, three minutes and 17 seconds with Michael Thompson (Sea Otter Swim Club) and Josiah Andrews (ORCA Swim Club) copping silver and bronze respectively Jessica Sookram (Orca Swim Club) ruled the roost in the 13-14 year-old female category with a time of one hour 12 minutes 35.6 seconds while Shareefa Lewis (Sea Otter Swim Club) was second. Elliot Gonsalves, who placed second overall, won the 15-17-year-old male category from Jeron and Jerome Sookram (Orca Swim Club) second and third respectively. Overall winner Seaton was first in the 18 & Over male category with Ethan Gonsalves second while Sekhel Tzedeq was third. Meanwhile, 62-year-old Garfield Lorrimer, the lone swimmer in the Masters category, had no competition and he swam the entire 3 kilometre race via the backstroke style.
