HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC – Unbeaten Bermuda remained on course for a place in next year’s Twenty20 World Cup in the Caribbean but face a potentially tricky hurdle in today’s final round of matches in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Americas Final.
The hosts picked up a point after both of yesterday’s fixtures were abandoned due to heavy rain, caused by the passage of Tropical Storm Philippe.
Bermuda had been scheduled to face Cayman Islands while Canada were set to take on Panama.
The abandonment left Bermuda on nine points from their five games and needing only a point to qualify, while Canada are two points behind in second.
However, Canada boast a superior net run rate, having dominated their opposition ever since their opening round 86-run defeat to Bermuda last weekend.
A win for the North American side today therefore will likely see them progress to the T20 World Cup, set to run from June 4-30 across seven Caribbean countries, along with United States.
While improved weather is expected on Saturday, the forecast has suggested a chance of showers, which could play a role in the intriguing final day.
Bermuda last reached a global ICC tournament when they qualified for the 50-over World Cup in the Caribbean 16 years ago, while Canada have been more successful, already turning out in a handful of World Cups with their last appearance coming 12 years ago.
