In a one-sided showdown at the Georgetown Cricket Club, Demerara emerged victorious, dethroning Berbice with a convincing 63-run win in the final of the Guyana Cricket (GCB) Board Senior Inter-County Super-50 tournament.
The match saw Demerara setting a competitive target of 194 after being dismissed for 193 in 39.5 overs.
Demerara were indebted to an impressive bowling display from Ronaldo Alimohamed that left Berbice struggling to chase down the total.
They were eventually restricted to 131 all out in 28.3 overs.
Berbice’s decision to send Demerara in to bat first seemed promising as they managed to restrict Demerara to a below par score. Richie Looknauth played a pivotal role in Demerara’s innings, top-scoring with an unbeaten 52. His innings included five boundaries and two towering sixes and provided the much-needed stability.
Captain Tevin Imlach contributed significantly with a composed 39 from 45 balls, featuring five boundaries. Imlach partnered with Akshaya Persaud to establish a crucial 51-run partnership for the fourth wicket, which laid a solid foundation for Demerara’s innings. Chandrapaul Hemraj and Sherfane Rutherford also played valuable knocks, scoring 29 and 21 runs, respectively.
Berbice’s bowling effort was led by Kevin Sinclair, who claimed four wickets for 31 runs and Romario Shepherd, who took two wickets for 18 runs.
Chasing the target, Berbice faced an uphill battle and were ultimately bowled out cheaply. Kevlon Anderson was the top scorer for Berbice, contributing 40 runs from 52 balls before being caught at point by Mavindra Dindyal off the bowling of Rutherford. Apart from Shimron Hetmyer’s 25 and Sinclair’s 10, none of the other Berbice batsmen managed to reach double figures.
Demerara’s bowlers maintained the pressure, with Alimohamed taking four crucial wickets for 29 runs while Rutherford added two more wickets, conceding 36 runs.
