Ahead of the Grenada International Sevens Rugby tournament set for late November, the ‘Green Machine’, Guyana’s national rugby team, has begun preparing for the upcoming tournament.
Yesterday, around 20-odd rugby players assembled at the Rugby Field in the National Park and engaged with newly appointed Head Coach, Claudius Butts. In addition to that engagement, they participated in a couple of ‘scrubby’ games with players constantly rotating among teams.
According to the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) Public Relations Officer (PRO), Godfrey Broomes, the afternoon’s exercise was conducted mainly to assess where players are in terms of fitness and game readiness in addition to form. As the time counts down to the tournament, Broomes noted that the ‘Green Machine’ would be tackling the various components of their game as they are looking for optimum performances at the tournament.
“We are looking to go out there and be very competitive,” Broomes told Stabroek Sport.
The Grenada International Sevens tournament is known as the longest running Sevens tournament in the Caribbean. It is expected to attract numerous teams from across the region and will fetch a total prize money of USD $20,000, an increase from previous editions.
The tournament billed for the ‘Spice Isle’ from November 30 – December 2, will take place at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium. Additionally, there will also be a Social 10’s tourney for fans looking to have some fun both on and off the field.
