Kwakwani, Colts and Kobras recorded wins when the inaugural edition of the “One Guyana” Basketball Premier League continued on Saturday evening at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
The Colts mauled the Sonics 95-19. Ronoko Vaughn tallied 17 points in the rout with Domitri Rankin the next-best scorer with 14 points. Supporting them with 13 points each were Carmelo Man-Son-Hing and Shane Webster, while Errol Dryden and O’Quacey Shortt tallied 10 points, respectively. For the loser, Karwin Jackson netted five points.
Meanwhile, Kwakwani downed Plaisance Guardians 68–59. Jamal Gilkes top scored with 19 points for the victors while Stanton Rose and Domair Gladstone tallied 14 and 12 points each. On the other side, Jared Sears amassed 18 points while Trenton Woolford and Nigel Bowen scored 10 and nine points apiece.
Similarly, Kobras brushed aside D-UP Academy 56–41. Carlos Edwards led the way with 16 points while Elijah Davis and Trevor Smith added 13 and 10 points respectively. For the losers, Jamaine Booker, Devon Murray, and Daniel Anthony scored 12, nine, and six points, respectively.
The tournament, which is a collaboration between the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport (MCY&S) and G-Boats Incorporated, is being run by the Guyana Basketball Federation. It forms part of the National Sports Academy and features 14 teams divided into two zones, which are the Harpy Eagles and Jaguars Conferences, respectively.
A minimum of 56 fixtures and a maximum of 63 matches are projected for the competition, which concludes in March 2024. The winner of the tournament, which will be played every Saturday at the same venue, will pocket $1,000,000, while the loser will receive $500,000.
