Charria Naitram, a 26-year-old lorry driver of Supply Village, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was yesterday charged with causing the death of a guard at Ogle by dangerous driving and placed on $1m bail.
Naitram appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court #1 before Magistrate Fabayo Azore where the charge was read to him. He pleaded not guilty and was placed on $1 million bail.
He pleaded not guilty to driving an unlicensed motor vehicle, driving an uninsured motor vehicle and driving an uncertified motor vehicle. On each charge, bail was granted in a sum of $25,000. The matter was adjourned to November 21, 2023 for a report.
On Sunday morning, Naitram was the driver of motor lorry #GAE 8189, which struck down and killed Patricia Hutson, a 63-year-old security guard of 13th Avenue, Diamond Housing Scheme, EBD, on the public road at Ogle, East Coast Demerara.
According to the police, the truck driver alleged that he was proceeding east on the Ogle Public Road when he saw the traffic light change from green to amber, then red. On seeing this, he applied the brakes, but the vehicle failed to stop. As a result, he changed lanes and the truck’s back wheel collided with Hutson, who moments before had disembarked from a minibus, and was waiting to cross the road, the police said.
